Anolis for my ESE force

Hey all

I enjoyed working on that ESE Black Mamba duelist so much that I decided to paint a gear in Guillaume’s style to add to the group, rather than rebasing and touching up another prepainted model. Since they’re the ESE they like an odd mix of cheap military surplus gears and more expensive flashy mercenaries and bodyguards to the Emirs, so I painted up a cheap old Anolis Refit recon gear.

While you can still buy the Anolis it actually doesn’t have any rules in the official Living Rule Book, but is present in our Brigand Ruleset expanded model list.

The objective was to have the model fit in with the stuff Guillaume had already painted, but still fit with the way I paint. I don’t know what paints he used, so I had to approximate using what I have.

On the left, my Anolis. On the right, a Jager in the style I’m trying to replicate. Everything on the Jager except some minor touchups and the base was painted by Guillaume.

Black Mamba No. 2 (a lot from someone else)

Me again!

A while ago I bought a collection of Heavy Gear minis from a very nice fellow by the name of Guillaume. The minis were clearly quite lovingly painted and very nicely based too. He also sent me, for free, a bunch of Heavy Gear parts and even a couple of models he hadn’t assembled.

I don’t mind having and playing with models that other people have painted at all, the only downsides for me were A) they were based on hex bases, which I dislike and don’t use and B) they weren’t magnetised and I like to magnetise so I can pick between the many variants Heavy Gear Blitz tends to offer for each model. The second point wasn’t really a problem as I don’t have to magnetise EVERY model, but for me it’s important that the bases match the rest of my minis (and I really don’t like hex bases at all), so I knew I’d have to do some rebasing and some touchup work.

Working on these already nicely painted models is actually quite a pleasant break from painting a model entirely from scratch, as it takes less time but I still then feel some creator’s attachment to the rebased and slightly altered model. It’s also quite enjoyable to sort of mimic someone else’s style when doing the touchup work.

Here’s the latest, which I rebased, magnetised, gave a shield, and gave a light rocket pack instead of the medium one, since that’s the standard loadout for the Mamba. I will be fielding him as an Eastern Sun Emirates (think sci fi Saudi Arabia) Combat Group Leader or Duellist.

The design on the shield is the faction symbol for the Eastern Sun Emirates – a 12 pointed Sun. It was a bit of a pain to paint but I’m fairly satisfied with the result, even if it’s rough in places. I might tidy it up a little or add more blacklining in the future.

More pictures after the jump.

Black Mamba No. 1 (A little bit of)

Hey Duckfans, it’s me here, back with a little bit of Black Mamba painting. I’ve always been a big fan of this model and I grew to appreciate it even more when I saw how disappointing the plastic Black Mamba came out. It’s such an iconic gear and has just the right amount of detail and bits and bobs to be really fun to paint. This is actually the first one I’ve ever painted though – I think because I like the model so much I was actually a bit intimidated to get on with it.

Anyway here it is! More pics after the jump.

Both hands are magnetised, the Medium Autocannon is newly painted but the sword is one I have shown on the blog before. I’m really happy with how the blue ammo display thing on the gun looks.

Neo-Soviet vehicles from Brigade Models

Hello duckfans, sort of a half product review half ‘look at this stuff I got’ post here I guess : ]

I’ve maintained a list of 15mm Sci-Fi stores for a while now and there are some I am always quick to recommend to people, first amongst which is the excellent Brigade Models. I’ve had my eye on some of their Neo-Soviet range for quite a while and I recently made an order, figuring I’d use them at 12mm (1/144) scale alongside Heavy Gear miniatures, perhaps as one of the existing but not fleshed out factions, perhaps as an entirely new faction.

Here’s what I got, with many more pics after the jump. I should say in advance the quality is generally very good for the price, with a normal amount of cleanup required.

The whole lot. The bags at the top are a bunch of accessories which we’ll use across many vehicles, not just these. Brigade does a pretty cool range of stowage and extra bits.

Epic 40k – Eldar Howling Banshees and army-so-far pics

Recently a got a whiteboard so my wife and I can write down things we need from the supermarket, chores to do etc and we can both just pick items from the list and do them, then satisfyingly check them off and have the other person wipe the board clean. It’s a nice fun way of doing things.

I had an item that said ‘paint at least one stand of aspect warriors’ because that’s something I wanted to do but kept putting off for some reason, so I decided to do a quick stand of Howling Banshees, as I think they have one of the best models in Epic.

Since I wanted to take pics of them anyway I thought I’d also take some quick pics of my entire Biel Tan force. It’s very much a work in progress, but it’s nice to see it slowly building in size.

Pics after the jump, as usual!

Epic 40k – Eldar Biel Tan Guardians and a Deathstalker

Just a quick post to show off some Eldar Guardians I just painted as a little batch, and a Deathstalker hovertank colour scheme I’m fairly happy with. As you can see, I’m putting together a Biel Tan force.

img_0815
I’d already painted one stand of these and the wraithlord, I just fancied doing some stuff in a batch – which is actually quite rare for me. Next I’ll do some more Deathstalkers and some Aspect Warriors, maybe some Wraithguard.

More pictures after the jump.

Interesting 10mm – 35mm scale mech

A little while ago I spotted a little blog store, Zandris IV Miniatures, selling a couple of 28mm scale mechs. Because I’m far more interested in gaming below 15mm I’m often unaware of mechs from larger scales that could actually work just fine as towering engines of destruction. The most important thing is they don’t have any features that clearly reveal their intended scale and these mechs certainly fit that criteria.

I went for one of the┬áType-45(D) ‘Satria’ Battlesuits, figuring I’d most likely use it as a ‘gearstrider’ or large one man mech in 12mm (1/144) scale. Having assembled it and fitted magnets to give it a variety of hardpoints, here are some pictures after the jump!
